To be honest David I think the question probably came from your Rambla-esque imagery of Pike St. As far as I know there is no actual proposal.

That being said I should also say that Tony Russo and I have recently formed the Planning and Policy Committee on the Capitol Hill Community Council. We are currently soliciting small neighborhood projects that can improve the pedestrian experience. This seems like a perfect one and we already have the council members explicitly stating that they would support it.

We are planning on hosting our first meeting sometime in August. If you are interested in getting on board please email me at: JoshMahar@gmail.com

At Candidate Survivor (city council candidate forum) tonight, the candidates were asked if they'd support closing "certain Capitol Hill Streets to cars on weekend nights". EVERY candidates said they'd support it. Does anyone know... was this a purely hypothetical question, or is there an actual proposal behind it? Sounds like a great idea to me, and one that actually seems doable since vehicle through-put is not much of an issue on weekend nights.

Pine St. is a little upside down right now but it's for a good cause.

Just wanted to re-iterate that tomorrow is your chance to see some of us candidates running for Capitol Hill Community Council. We are really hoping to get some great work done in preserving and bettering our neighborhood but we need everyone's support and ideas. So come on out tomorrow!

Tuesday May 26th, 7:00pm
Cal Anderson Shelter House (just north of the Ball Fields).

I also wanted to throw out a really great blog I have been reading called "Emergent Urbanism". He has been doing some articles for the International Journal for Architectural Research and they are phenomenal. Check it out:

You may have seen Josh's e-mail about his and this group's involvement with the Capitol Hill Community Council. Josh is running for an at-large position on the officers board. I hope others will consider throwing their hat into the ring.

The community council election process is old-fashioned politics. Election night success really comes down to who can bring people out on a week night to sit in crowded room for a few hours, listen to candidates statements and vote. Butts in the seats is how you win. So, mark your calendars now for the night of Thursday June 25th. We can all go back to passively monitoring the internet after that. But that night we gotta show up!

I've been chair of the council for the past year but am not running so that I can dedicate more time to my business. I plan to remain heavily involved, however -- especially if the council can move forward with a new spirit.

This is really last minute, but there's a city council brown bag meeting about changes to the Pike/Pine neighborhood building guidelines - Tuesday (the 21st) at 12:30 at City hall, in council chambers, on the 2nd floor.
